Red Watch Band Application
Red Watch Band is a national bystander intervention campaign that originated at Stony Brook University, after a faculty member’s son died of alcohol poisoning while enrolled at another university. The campaign began during Spring 2008. UW-Madison is one of about 50 colleges and universities around the country who have a Red Watch Band program. Students who participate receive CPR certification and alcohol safety information. The program raises awareness about “toxic drinking” -- consumption leading to alcohol overdose/poisoning – in order to prevent it, and prepares students to respond to toxic drinking emergencies if they occur. At UW-Madison, the program is student run, with content delivered by Student Emergency Medical Services members (CPR) and Wischoices members (alcohol safety). Staff members provide training for the instructors, review content and support the program. During the Spring Semester 2010, 34 students completed the training. An additional 27 students were trained on September 13, 2010. Evaluations from both trainings were overwhelming positive.
The opportunity for members of fraternities and sororities to become involved as both CPR instructors and alcohol safety facilitators is provided through a grant from the Department of Transportation and UW System. Participants will be share responsibility for tailoring Red Watch Band for Greek Life at UW-Madison. More information on the national campaign is available at:
