Motto: Dikaia Upotheke – Justice Our Foundation
On the evening of November 5, 1834, 30 students met at Williams College and formed the social fraternity of Willams College, today known as Delta Upslion. Delta Upsilon is the only fraternity today that practices non-secrecy. Because of this, anyone considering joining Delta Upsilon may attend our chapter meetings and get a feel of how things operate. Our house is founded on four basic principles which include the development of character, the promotion of friendship, the diffusion of liberal culture, and the advancement of justice.
The Madison chapter of Delta Upsilon is one of the strongest chapters in the country as well as a leader on this campus. Our house is situated on Lake Mendota complete with a pier and has thirty members living in during the school year. The house has a newly renovated basement, new entertainment system, study den, parking lot, game room with pool table and darts, and Ethernet and cable access in each room. Delta Upsilon is one of the only fraternities on campus to also have a full-time cook, who provides three meals a day.
Delta Upsilon has hosted many special events which are regarded as some of the best on campus. On top of these social functions held each semester, it is also important to us to give back to the community. Every fall we hold a philanthropy called Bump, Set, Splash. Members of every sorority on campus come down to Delta Upsilon for a volleyball tournament held in the shores of Lake Mendota behind our house. Each year, we raise thousands of dollars that go to help children diagnosed with cancer at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Delta Upsilon also plays an essential role in the biggest greek philanthropy nationwide, Humorology. Humorology is a competition put on by sorority/fraternity pairs that perform their own musical in front of an audience of thousands at Memorial Theatre at the end of the year. This year, Humorology is raising money for the New York Firefighters Fund, Camp Heartland, and the Dean of Students Crisis Fund. Delta Upsilon is proud to have made the finals for the show for the last two years.
Delta Upsilon is more than just one big social activity. Everyone in the house comes to have a good time, meet people, and continue our traditions. Members of Delta Upsilon have also become leaders in school and in society, we boast one of the highest GPA’s of campus’ fraternities. Past members of our chapter include J.P. Morgridge (CEO Cisco Systems), Williams Davidson (Harley Davidson), William Kellett (CEO Kimberly Clark), and Brewster Shaw (Astronaut).
As you are considering becoming a member of the greek system, I strongly encourage you to investigate Delta Upsilon. If you have any questions you may stop by the house anytime and someone will be more than willing to discuss with you any issues.
