Sigma Alpha Epsilon. 627 N. Lake Street, Madison, Wisconsin. SAE has had a long and proud tradition at UW-Madison, and in the United States in general. It is the largest and one of the oldest fraternities. Since being founded in 1856 at the University of Alabama, it has since grown to 220 chapters in the U.S. and Canada. Obviously, it has a tradition of being one of the strongest nationwide fraternities.
SAE's here at UW-Madison are no exceptions with close to 130 active members and with one of th largest rush programs on campus. SAE has been a proactive contributor to the UW campus since 1903. SAE owes their longevity and current strength to our commitment to live our lives in the model of "The True Gentleman", a set of guidelines that all SAE's are required to know.
As a new member, your foremost task is to get to know the rest of the guys in SAE, as well as learn some of its history. Sigma Alpha Epsilon requires all chapters to conduct dry rush, and the Fraternity has a strong policy against hazing. SAE encourages pledge programs which enhance each individual's personal growth.
Some of the major social events include walkouts, formal dances, and Paddy Murphy. Walkout destinations have included: University of Iowa, University of Illinois, Indiana University, and even Bradley University. Formal dances have been held in downtown Chicago and in Milwaukee. Paddy Murphy, one of the most well-known fraternity events in the U.S., is held every spring semester. This is a four day event which includes sororities competing for the right to attend the last day of festivities. SAE's at UW-Madison boast one of the most active social calendars on campus with usually three nights of activities each week.
At SAE, we also take pride in our school and community. This means that we take things such as grades and campus involvement seriously. Our average house GPA is close to 3.0. We also have over a thousand hours of community service each year. One of the most prominent community services has been the cleanup of several parks and roads in the Madison area. It is a rewarding activity and we plan to continue our proud tradition of academics and volunteer work.
First year members are asked to pay $450 their pledge semester. Then, their next semester, the fee is $400. After that, the amount of money owed each semester decreases in increments of $20. However, SAE will not hinder a person from joining purely because of money. Payment plans and other arrangements can be made with the House Treasurer. Also, these fees include invitation to all SAE social events including SAE parties and events at third-party places (restaurants, bars, etc.). Compared to other Greek houses, SAE dues are actually quite affordable.
All in all, SAE is the biggest and considered by many to be the best fraternities on campus. By joining SAE, you enter into a fraternity that believes in living as a True Gentleman. Social activities, grades, community service, and brotherhood are what we do best. The only question left to ask yourself is, "Do I want to be the best man I can be?"
