Founding beliefs,
history, etc.
Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity was inspired by Richard J. H. Gottheil,
a professor of languages at Columbia University . Today, after many
years of brotherhood development, the Zeta Beta Tau Brotherhood
is 110,000 brothers strong and present at over 80 campuses in North
America . ZBT has been at the forefront in pioneering new concepts
- as evidenced by its very founding, its elimination of sectarian
membership practices, and its ban on the pledge process. The University
of Wisconsin-Madison Zeta Beta Tau sets a precedent for a 21 st
Century fraternity by abandoning the concept of pledging. After
accepting a bid, new Brothers are in fact Brothers, not second class
citizens also known as pledges. As a new member, you are instantly
connected to the benefits of the fraternity.
At the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
Zeta Beta Tau surfaced in 1916 as a secret society known as the
Octosa Club of Madison . Colonized as the Alpha Kappa chapter of
Zeta Beta Tau in 1922, the fraternity has been a powerhouse of excellence
in Madison ever since. Today, the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Alpha Kappa chapter of Zeta Beta Tau takes pride in being a diverse
yet tightly knit brotherhood. As one of the most national fraternities
on campus, ZBT members hail from Los Angeles to New York City and
from Minnesota to Texas . As that Zeta Beta Tau is one of the fastest
growing and strongest fraternities on campus, it is truly a great
time to be a "Zeeb".
Social
Zeta Beta Tau is known for
unforgettable parties, events with sororities, and elegant formals.
Every week the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity hosts a Brotherhood Development
Event, which brings together the entire house for a variety of activities
and events. The University of Wisconsin chapter of Zeta Beta Tau
has also sponsored visits to Chicago , trips to major league baseball
games, and weekends at other Big Ten ZBT chapters for Badger athletic
events. Long after graduation, members of Zeta Beta Tau remark that
the fraternity made their experience at UW-Madison the most memorable
years of their lives.
Extracurricular/Athletics
Members of ZBT at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison make a difference outside of the fraternity.
They have been the editor-in-chief at the Badger Herald, high ranking
members of ASM (our student government), Division I athletes, Big
Ten Athlete of the Week, members of the Interfraternity Council,
the Madison Israel Public Affairs Committee , the campus Hillel
and Chabad, high level members of both College Democrats and College
Republicans, and DJ's at the UW-Madison student radio station. For
house athletics, ZBT has teams or brothers participating in intramural
football, basketball, tennis, and soccer, as well as the widely-heralded
Z-Leage Basketball Organization.
Philanthropy Info
The Alpha Kappa Chapter of ZBT has long held the belief that giving
back is a vital part of any member's involvement in our organization.
We sponsor several charitable causes with philanthropy events throughout
the school year. We have raised large donations through events and
fundraisers for Cystic Fibrosis, the Children's Miracle Network,
the American Cancer Society and the Testicular Cancer Fund. The
fraternity takes part in varied annual functions while raising money
in a variety of other ways including participation in campus philanthropies,
clothing drives, food drives, Relay for Life, and charitable donations.
Academic Information
Our house Academic Chairman heads an intensive academic
program dedicated to assuring brothers' academic welfare. The fraternity's
base of upperclassmen with diverse majors allows for in-house guidance
and tutoring for underclassmen. The brothers major in diverse subjects
such as economics, business, engineering, rhetoric, philosophy,
and biology. As a whole, Zeta Beta Tau consistently ranks at the
top of the Fraternity GPA list. Recently, University of Wisconsin-Madison
ZBT brothers have gone on to attend top law, medical, and graduate
schools across the country.
