Scholarship:

The Iota Chapter of Alpha Phi prides itself on being a well-balanced sorority. Not only are we comprised of a diverse group of intelligent, motivated and talented girls, but as our house GPA shows, we take schoolwork very seriously. We offer a wide variety of scholarships through Alpha Phi International and through the UW Greek system. We also participate in career networking programs and have held resume writing workshops for our members. In recent years we began providing incentive and rewards for good grades by giving out “Smart Cookie” awards to members who have received a given amount of A’s. The awards consist of gift certificates to a local bakery or clothing stores. While any member of Alpha Phi will agree that academics is their number one priority, don’t be fooled; we can still party with the best of them!

Community Service and Campus Involvement:

For the past two years, our chapter has organized the Annual Kiss Off, an event in which participants purchase raffle tickets for the chance to literally “kiss” a $2000 scooter for the opportunity to take it home with them if they are the last one standing. This year’s Kiss Off in April raised over $2,200 for our national philanthropy, the Alpha Phi Foundation. Through its annual Cardiac Care Award, The Alpha Phi Foundation helps to fund research and educational programs that support women’s cardiac health. As a result of these efforts, health care professionals and women everywhere learn more about the causes, prevention and treatment of heart disease, the number one killer of women in the U.S. Alpha Phi has adopted the symbol of the red dress, which symbolizes women’s cardiac health.

Alpha Phi’s not only put together their own amazing philanthropic event, but also participate in a number of campus wide events, including our favorite, Humorology! Alpha Phi received 3 rd place, the Spirit Award, and Best Costumes award in 2003, and won Best Director in the 2004 show.

In 2004, Alpha Phi also participated in Relay for Life to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and made blankets to donate to children in hospitals through Project Linus. We service the community by actively participating and donating to other philanthropy events organized by our peers in fraternities and sororities as well as those sponsored by other campus organizations.

In addition to community service, we also participate each year in UW events such as Homecoming and Greek Week. In fact, members of our sorority serve on the Homecoming committee. We also have members who write for campus newspapers, compete with the sailing team, and hold positions in several scholastic organizations.

Leadership:

There are many leadership opportunities available to all members. From elected and appointed positions to committee membership, all girls have the chance to plan events within the house such as Parent’s Weekend, Greek Week and Formal! We regularly attend conferences and retreats to support women in leadership roles on the UW campus as well as participating in regional and national conventions with Alpha Phi International.

Social Events and Sisterhood:

Each year we have many different parties including date parties, crush parties, themed parties and Fall Semi-Formal and Spring Formal. This year we had a 70s party a Pajama Party and many more! Parties are a great way to release the stress of schoolwork, hang out with the other sisters and meet other people in and outside of the Greek system!

We also have a ton of great sisterhood events planned from movie nights, to dinners, to makeovers to spending the day at Noah’s Ark. This year we even took a trip to Chicago!

Alpha Phi follows a strict no-hazing policy, which fosters growth of character among all its members .
